At the recent TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR event in London’s Bloomsbury Hotel on September 25, 2018, TOPHOTELNEWS caught up with industry leader , who told us about her biggest career mistake, and the lessons she has learned along the way.
is the director of inD Creations, an interior design and project management studio that specialises in interiors for hospitality and residential projects. Prior to this she was a freelance FF&E designer at Sigma Architecture and Interior Design in London, and before this an interior designer at Hotel Design Inc..
Biggest career mistake
does not judge events in her career in terms of mistakes, but rather in terms of challenges. She cites her biggest challenge as being getting her independent career off the ground. She says she experienced numerous setbacks and dead ends at the start of her career, but that these forced her to change her approach and way of thinking. She said that because of these obstacles, she became more creative and innovative, and as a result of this, realised the power of bravery.
Deema also mentions that instead of focusing on the end goal, the more important thing is to enjoy the journey. In practice, this involves taking things one step at a time, building real and lasting relationships will colleagues and clients, and seeing the fruits of your labour as you go along.
Her biggest piece of advice to young interior designers who are just embarking on their career is to grab hold of who they are and who they want to be, and to forge ahead with conviction in their own personal path. The biggest thing that she got out of this, and has seen people around her experience the same, is the ability to redefine success on your own terms.
She stresses the importance of truth and authenticity to yourself along your professional journey, and that this in itself will bring its own form of success, as well as the eventual career that you envisioned at the very beginning.
