Travelling through Mumbai or waiting for a train there is about to get more comfortable.
At least, that’s the goal of the Indian Railway Catering Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), which is planning to open new pod hotels near the Mumbai Central Railway Station.
The group, in fact, has already sent in a proposal to the Western Railways. That proposal currently awaits approval.
If the proposal is successful, it will mean a big increase in affordable comfort options for travellers who are moving by train through Mumbai.
These innovative pod hotels were first developed in Japan, capturing the hospitality world’s attention with compact accommodations that also boasted the same modern amenities one finds in most hotel rooms. Following the likes of Japan, Singapore and Australia to name a few, India got its first pod hotel, Urbanpod, in 2017.
The plan that the IRCTC has developed involves providing a stopover option with the pods that is more comfortable than the currently available options.
The first phase of the project involves 30 pods, while future plans call for expanded numbers depending on how well received the first batch proves to be.
“The capsule concept will be one-of-a-kind with ultra-modern, smart amenities available to passengers. This construction proposal is part of a wave of innovative ideas to enhance the passenger experience,” said , manager and spokesperson at IRCTC.
Each pod will be 5 feet by 6 feet, complete with essential comforts guests can enjoy for seven of eight hours at a time.
The list of amenities in the pods includes Wi-Fi, power sockets, USB ports, temperature control, light control, entertainment screens, and personal lockers for valuables and other possessions.
The pods will also be adjacent to common areas with dining, rest room, lounge, and changing rooms.
The project is slated to be spread over 4,000 square feet, and, if it proves successful, the IRCTC is likely to replicate it in other Indian cities, too.
