Aprilli Design Studio, a Toronto-based design firm, has revealed more details about its Autonomous Travel Suite, essentially a hotel room inside of a self-driving vehicle.
The idea behind this is a fairly simple—if not entirely fantastical—one: what if you could cover distance and literally travel while sleeping, working, or doing whatever else inside your hotel room? It sounds like the stuff of science fiction, but companies like Aprilli Design Studio are working to bring it closer to reality.
Hotel coming to your doorstep
As imagined by Aprilli, these driverless mobile suites would come complete with a sleeping area that has a mattress, rest room that includes a toilet and sitting shower, a space for working and entertaining, and even a small kitchen. The space would be built to accommodate as many as five people at a time.
“It’s basically a hotel room so it has everything inside it,” , a designer at Toronto-based Aprilli, told media. “Whether it’s six hours or 10 hours, you’ll feel comfortable inside it.”
The Autonomous Travel Suite is already garnering attention from the wider hospitality space, capturing accolades within the industry, specifically the Radical Innovation Award, which is a design competition for hoteliers, supply companies and others.
A hotel room meets Uber?
How it works is that Autonomous Travel Suite communicates through a central platform known as autonomous interface, which controls the operations and services between the mobile suite and larger hotel facilities. It does this with advanced technologies, allowing users to easily pick multiple destinations and other services via an online app.
The idea is that the Autonomous Travel Suite will be able to arrive with exact specifications at a travelers’ front door to pick them up.
Developers are working to program the Autonomous Interface to find the best route and communicate with facilities in order to arrange any services that a guest requests along the way. It will also be able to control the indoor environment.
When will this technology be ready? Driverless cars are currently being tested in a smattering of cities in the United States.
Lee, for his part, predicts that Autonomous Travel Suites may become a reality by the year 2030, with a battery able to travel for as long as 10 hours.
