Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts has another development underway in the Middle Eastern oasis of Dubai. The coastal city, located in the United Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf, is one of the leading business hubs in the area whose main economic source is tourism, making it an ideal spot for Waldorf to build one of their 5-star hotels. The Waldorf Astoria Dubai International Finance Centre is currently under construction and is set to open in the first quarter of 2018.
This new luxury resort with boast 247 rooms which will form part of a mixed-use residential, retail and office development. Conference and wellness facilities will appeal to business travelers and recreational tourists alike, and the hotel will offer upscale dining and events spaces.
The architect for this project is renowned international firm Perkins + Will. Founded in 1935, this interdisciplinary research and design firm has offices in over 20 countries and employs more than 2000 people across the fields of architecture, interior design, branded environments, urban design and landscape architecture, offering clients the complete package. Innovators in the field of design, Perkins + Will also has 10 Research Labs, putting them at the forefront of smart and sustainable construction. Working in a range of sectors including civic and cultural, corporate, residential and hospitality, the firm has been involved with many notable projects outside the hotel industry, most importantly the widely lauded Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, which was headed by Perkins + Will designer (Managing and Design Director of the North Carolina office) in collaboration with famed British firm Adjaye Associates, among others. Freelon is the founder of The Freelon Group, which joined Perkins + Will in 2014, and he is also an Obama appointee to the National Commission of Fine Arts.
Perkins + Will already have experience designing hotels in the region, and are responsible for the design of projected hotels the Hajj City Hotel in Saudi Arabia, Diplomatic Quarter Hotel in Saudi Arabia and the Boutique Business Hotel in the UAE.
