For over 135 years, Orient Express trains inspired authors, artists and film directors and welcomed famous guests. Steeped in tradition, myth and adventure, the legendary service will see a revival as French hotel giant Accor launches their newest, perhaps most iconic, brand — the Orient Express Hotel.
The Orient Express Hotel Bangkok will open in one of the Thai capital’s newest and boldest skyscrapers, King Power Mahanakhon, boasting incredible design and all of the luxury you would expect from an Orient Express hotel. We find out more.
A legend reincarnated
The first Orient Express property will open its doors in the King Power Mahanakhon, the highest skyscraper in the capital. This opening reflects the brand’s vision to build a collection of prestigious hotels with the multicultural heritage, mystery and exoticism of Orient Express.
Once upon a time Josephine Baker, Albert Einstein, Coco Chanel, Graham Greene, Ernest Hemingway, Marlene Dietrich and Mata Hari travelled in the Orient Express trains. Agatha Christie made them even more famous with her eponymous novel Murder on the Orient Express, while Albert Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes and James Bond’s From Russia with Love further immortalised the Orient Express name in popular imagination.
Orient Express redefined rail travel in the 1900s, introducing the first sleeper cars linking West to East and delivering unprecedented levels of comfort and dining. The Orient Express Mahanakhon Bangkok will feature the same luxury and refinement while reinterpreting the art of travel.
Accor’s midas touch
French hotel group Accor is bringing this epic brand name back to life with the launch of the Orient Express Hotel, the latest in their portfolio of luxury properties.
This revival of the Orient Express brand is the result of a deal between Accor and the SNCF Group, who signed a partnership deal in 2017 after Accor acquired a 50 percent stake in the company. SNCF owns seven of the original Orient Express carriages.
This new hotel will be housed in Thailand’s tallest building, the King Power Mahanakhon, which stands at an incredible 314 metres.
Accor has enlisted famed designer to craft the bespoke interiors, which hark back to the opulence and luxury that the Orient Express train cars were famous for. Auer has taken his cues from the Art Deco patterns and motifs that would have been found inside the cars, and transplanted them to this iconic skyscraper in Bangkok for the Orient Express Hotel.
The Orient Express Mahanakhon Bangkok will feature 154 rooms including 9 suites and 2 penthouses, as well as an entire floor devoted to wellness including an outdoor pool and jacuzzi plus signature Orient Express Spa by Guerlain.
The hotel will also boast some of the finest culinary offerings in the city, with two delicious restaurants conceived of by award-winning chef David Thompson on two levels of the hotel.
Guests will also be able to take advantage of some epic views out over the city from the newly opened SkyWalk viewing platform on levels 74, 75 and 78, as well as dining and drinking at the rooftop bar and restaurant located on level 76.
Chairman and CEO of AccorHotels Asia Pacific spoke of this new venture, saying, “We are proud to bring the multicultural heritage, mystery and exoticism of the legendary Orient Express brand to Bangkok. We look forward to bringing this same luxury and refinement to the new incarnation of Orient Express hotels.”
The signing was also an emotional day for CEO of King Power Group Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, who lost his father in an air crash last year, and who dedicated the project to him.
The Orient Express Mahanakhon Bangkok will open in the last quarter of 2019, 136 years after the Orient Express took its maiden voyage from Paris.
